IMGs who matched in the 2024 Main Residency Match averaged 2.8 research experiences and 8.3 abstracts, presentations, and publications, according to the NRMP Charting Outcomes report. You can’t build a record like that from your desk. You build it by presenting your work, meeting program directors in person, and earning the letters that truly carry weight on an application.
So here’s the full 2026 lineup. We checked every date, venue, and deadline below against each society’s own official pages in June 2026, and we’ve listed the meetings in calendar order, January through December. That way you can scan the whole year and pick where you want to be standing next to your poster.

Abstract Deadlines: Abstracts for the 2026 meeting closed in early June 2025. As a rule, the paper and poster window opens in spring and closes in early June the year before the meeting.
Why It Matters for IMGs: Ortho is one of the toughest fields an IMG can chase, so a podium or poster spot here says, loud and clear, that you’re serious.
IMG Tip: Pair a case report or outcomes project with the resident and young surgeon events. That’s where you start collecting faculty contacts.
AAD is the meeting in dermatology, covering medical, surgical, and cosmetic practice.

The ACP Internal Medicine Meeting is the largest gathering in internal medicine, and it’s genuinely welcoming to trainees.

Why It Matters for IMGs: Internal medicine is the most common door IMGs walk through, and ACP gives you plenty of chances to present and meet people.

AAN covers the whole of neurology, start to finish, and it’s the field’s headline meeting.

AACE leans practical: clinical endocrinology, diabetes, and metabolism, with patient care front and center.

Abstract Deadlines: There’s no general scientific abstract call here. Radiology research goes to RSNA and ARRS instead.
Why It Matters for IMGs: Showing up signals real interest in the specialty and its policy side, which is useful context for any IMG eyeing radiology.
IMG Tip: Send your research to RSNA and ARRS. Use ACR to understand the profession and meet the people running it.
APA is the largest psychiatry meeting in the world, and psychiatry remains one of the most IMG-friendly specialties in the Match.

Venue: Moscone Center, San Francisco, California
Abstract Deadlines: The 2026 meeting has already taken place, so its abstract window is closed. The 2027 cycle is open now and closes September 10, 2026, so that is the one to aim for. APA accepts posters and new research in structured (IMRaD) format.
Why It Matters for IMGs: Psychiatry takes a large share of IMGs every year, and APA puts you in front of program faculty from across the country.
IMG Tip: A case report or a small clinical project makes an easy first poster here. Target the 2027 cycle and submit before the September 10, 2026 deadline.
ASCO is the biggest and most influential oncology meeting on the calendar, full stop.

Abstract Deadlines: Abstracts typically close in late January or early February before the meeting.
Why It Matters for IMGs: For hematology and oncology applicants, this is about as strong a signal of academic commitment as you can put on paper.
IMG Tip: Even a co-authorship on a poster is a line worth having, so get onto a research team early.
The AMA is the largest physician organization in the US. Its June Annual Meeting is a policy and governance gathering, but the part that matters most for IMGs is the AMA Research Challenge.
Dates: Annual Meeting (House of Delegates): June 5 to 10, 2026. AMA Research Challenge: virtual, held in the fall.
Venue: Hyatt Regency Chicago, Chicago, Illinois (Annual Meeting). The Research Challenge is fully online.
Abstract Deadlines: AMA Research Challenge abstracts are due July 16, 2026, and you must be an AMA member by that date. Status updates go out in early September 2026.
Why It Matters for IMGs: The Research Challenge is the largest national, multi-specialty research event open to medical students, residents, and IMGs, and it runs entirely online, so no visa or travel is required. It carries a $10,000 grand prize.
IMG Tip: This is one of the most accessible national presentations for an IMG. Polish a 400-word abstract, join the AMA, and submit before July 16.
Run by the Endocrine Society, ENDO is the largest global meeting for endocrine science and clinical practice.

Abstract Deadlines: Regular abstracts for the 2026 meeting closed January 22, 2026, and the late-breaking window ran March 25 to April 21, 2026.
Why It Matters for IMGs: If endocrinology, diabetes, or metabolism is your goal, ENDO connects you with top programs and the translational research crowd.
IMG Tip: No poster? Go anyway. You can attend, meet faculty, and scout out research collaborations.
FUTURE, formerly the National Conference for Family Medicine Residents and Medical Students, is the AAFP’s dedicated event for trainees exploring family medicine. With more than 300 residency programs in the Expo Hall, it is one of the single best chances an IMG has to meet family medicine programs face to face in one room.

Venue: Kansas City Convention Center, Kansas City, Missouri
Abstract Deadlines: Poster applications for the student and resident competitions close April 1, 2026. Around 50 posters are selected for display, and the top research posters are invited to give a brief onsite oral presentation.
Why It Matters for IMGs: Family medicine offers more IMG-friendly programs than almost any other specialty, and FUTURE puts hundreds of them in one hall alongside workshops, procedural courses, and the student and resident congresses. (Note: this is a separate event from AAFP FMX in October, which is the clinical CME meeting.)
IMG Tip: Register early to save (early-bird closes April 15), and if you are an AAFP member, apply for a $600 AAFP Foundation scholarship by May 1, 2026 (notifications go out June 3). Pair a poster with time in the Expo Hall to turn introductions into real program contacts.
The ACS Clinical Congress is one of the largest surgical education meetings in the world.

The American Society of Hematology meeting is the top hematology gathering worldwide.

Not always. Several societies run virtual or hybrid attendance, and plenty of posters can be presented by a co-author if you can’t make the trip. Check each society’s rules before you submit
Case reports go down well at neurology, internal medicine, emergency medicine, and a long list of subspecialty meetings. For an IMG, they’re the quickest way to land that first presentation.
