Rotation Schedule
Monday to Friday | Start Time: 6:30–7:00 AM
Pre-Rounds
Review patient charts, overnight events, laboratory results, imaging studies, and operative reports
Prepare concise patient presentations for the surgical team
Participate in resident-led discussions regarding patient management plans
Morning Surgical Rounds
Join attending surgeons and residents for inpatient rounds
Evaluate pre-operative and post-operative patients
Discuss surgical decision-making, wound management, drain care, pain control, and discharge planning
Exposure to multidisciplinary patient care in a teaching hospital environment
Operating Room Exposure
Observe and assist (as permitted by supervising physician) in a variety of general surgery procedures
Opportunities to assist with non-invasive tasks such as patient preparation, maintaining the sterile field, suturing practice, skin closure assistance, dressing changes, and basic procedural skills when permitted
Cases may include laparoscopic and open abdominal procedures, hernia repairs, gallbladder surgeries, colorectal procedures, breast surgery, soft tissue operations, and emergency surgical cases
Afternoon Activities
Resident Teaching Conferences & Didactics: Participate in educational sessions, morbidity and mortality conferences, journal clubs, and case-based discussions
Clinical Documentation: Exposure to operative notes, progress notes, discharge summaries, and perioperative documentation
Case Presentations: Discuss surgical indications, anatomy, perioperative management, and postoperative complications with faculty and residents

Outpatient Surgical Clinics: Exposure to surgical consultations, pre-operative assessments, and post-operative follow-up visits
Emergency Department Consults: Observe the evaluation and management of acute surgical conditions
Multidisciplinary Collaboration: Work alongside residents, attending surgeons, anesthesiologists, nursing staff, pharmacists, and allied healthcare professionals
