The United States is facing a serious physician shortage that’s expected to become more acute in the next decade. We need to look in our own backyard, where states like Florida have expanded access by creating alternative pathways that bring more experienced doctors into our healthcare system who can help meet the immediate needs of communities.
Florida has launched a complete pathway to medical licensure for qualified international physicians. This pathway recognized the value of international postgraduate education as opposed to the traditional route, where IMGs must repeat residency training in the U.S. It is for physicians who completed their medical education outside the United States and have considerable postgraduate training or clinical experience in their home countries or elsewhere. These doctors can then apply for full licensure by fulfilling the regulations established by the Florida Board of Medicine. That credential enables them to practice in hospitals, enter private practice and work for the underserved throughout the state. Averages like this one are usually gathered from salary data, so we can see that in Florida the average physician salary is about $561,194 (with a median of $475k across all specialties). To obtain a full license and to work independently in Florida, IMGs must fulfill the following requirement by Florida Medical Board:
You must be a graduate from:
An LCME-accredited U.S. medical school, or
An international medical school recognized by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates.
