Rotation Details
Duration: 4 Weeks
Rotation Schedule
Monday to Friday | Start Time: 7:00–8:00 AM
Pre-Rounds
• Review inpatient charts, operative notes, imaging, and lab results
• Prepare patient summaries for surgical rounds
Morning Rounds
• Led by the attending general surgeon
• Bedside evaluation of post-operative and pre-operative patients
• Discussion of surgical plans, wound care, drains, and post-op management
Operating Room Exposure
• Observe and assist (as permitted) in common general surgery procedures
• Exposure to pre-op preparation, sterile techniques, intraoperative workflow, and post-op care
• Cases may include abdominal surgeries, hernia repairs, soft tissue procedures, and emergency cases
Post-Rounds / Afternoon Activities
• Case Discussions & Teaching: Focus on surgical anatomy, indications for surgery, perioperative management, and complications
• Clinical Documentation: Assist with progress notes, operative summaries, and discharge planning
Additional Learning Opportunities
Outpatient Surgical Clinic: Exposure to pre-surgical consultations and post-operative follow-ups
Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Work alongside anesthesia, nursing staff, and allied health professionals
